Academic SEEK Program Director in Queens, New York

Reporting to the Asst. Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student retention, the SEEK Director is responsible for the overall administration of the Percy Ellis Sutton SEEK Program, whose mission is to provide comprehensive academic support to assist capable students who otherwise might not be able to attend college due to their educational and financial circumstances. In addition to the responsibility for administering the functions and services vested in the SEEK Program, the Director shall also be responsible for monitoring all SEEK funding, facilitating support programs and services provided by various College departments through SEEK funding, and for the advocacy and representation of SEEK Students from admission to graduation.

Specific duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Directing, supervising, and managing the day-to-day activities of the program including hiring, supervising, developing, and evaluating professional and support staff;
  • Working with the Financial Aid, Bursar, Admissions, and Registrar Offices on a regular basis to ensure that proper records are maintained and appropriate services provided to SEEK students;
  • Ensuring proper verification of students’ status and program eligibility
  • Working with several academic departments that offer sections in which SEEK students are enrolled, and with the development of supplemental instruction sections
  • Facilitating the recruitment, course scheduling, and provision of support services to summer immersion SEEK students
  • Preparing annual program and budget reports to the University Office of Special Programs
  • Representing the program internally and externally including serving on appropriate College and University committees

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s Degree and eight years’ relevant experience required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and at least six years’ related experience
  • Administrative and academic experience in Special Programs
  • Ability to Work Autonomously and adapt to Faculty/Staff/Student needs
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a diverse and complex office
  • Strong demonstrated organizational skills, detail orientation and multi-tasking skills
  • Possess strong critical thinking/problem solving skills
  • Working knowledge of MS Office, People Soft/ Oracle skills and proficiency with MS Word and Excel
  • Excellent Written and interpersonal communications skills

Acad SEEK Student Support Specialist (Multiple Positions) in Queens, New York

POSITION DETAILS

Reporting to the SEEK/Counseling Director, the Academic Student Support Specialist will be responsible for providing educational support, academic advisement, and counseling assistance to students in the Percy Ellis Sutton/ Search for Education Elevation and Knowledge (SEEK) Program.

Specific duties include but are not limited to:

  • Provide consultation services to instructional and administrative staff regarding students with personal and academic difficulties.
  • Provide advisement to all level students;
  • Lead a freshman orientation seminar;
  • Provide information regarding Queens College policies,procedures,requirements and major offerings;
  • Conduct student workshops on: Academic probation, study skills, test-taking strategies, time management, career options, and success and motivation;
  • Refer students to appropriate services on and off campus;
  • Assist students in setting goals and priorities for success;
  • Participate in collaborative outreach efforts for students experiencing academic and personal difficulties, in conjunction with administrators,faculty, and student groups;
  • Provide consultation to faculty, staff and administrators on programs to improve student retention;
  • Participate in SEEK Program college committees including, but not limited to, providing one-on-one and group college advisement and coordinating classroom presentations and student workshops.

QUALIFICATIONS

A Master’s degree in counseling, social work, or psychology and two years’ related experience. Other related master’s degrees can be considered.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Three years of counseling experience in a similar program.
  • NYS license in counseling/social work or related discipline
  • Experience working with inner city students from diverse socioeconomic, racial and ethnic background, non-traditional/underrepresented students in higher education settings
  • Willingness to work evenings and weekends on flexible schedule
  • Willingness to travel within the five boroughs/ national and host day and evenings events, periodically.
  • Understanding and commitment towards the mission of the program, with determined delivery of service.
  • Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to adapt to meet students needs; demonstrate organization skills; detail oriented and ability to multi task
  • Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with faculty, college administration, and staff
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Products such as Word, Excel and Power Point
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft/Oracle information systems in a higher education or government environment
  • Excellent written, verbal, analytical and interpersonal communication skills
